I feel like I won the lottery! My friend Sue got the call that a last minute spot had opened to volunteer at the elephant sanctuary and she could bring a friend. The Elephant Sanctuary is a remote place (Hohenwald TN) where circus, zoo and service elephants can go to retire in peace on 2,700 acres of land. No more abuse. No more captivity. A chance to live out their remaining years in dignity. It is not open to the public and there aren’t many volunteering chances so what a lovely way to spend the day. It was hot, hard work but fun too. We cut banana leaves for elephant treats🌱🍌🐘. Weeded and mulched and pulled honeysuckle out of fencing, spread chert and made elephant enrichment treats. Everyone there had to apply for a lottery and all volunteers had traveled from New York, New Jersey, the Carolinas and St Louis just to spend a day in the heat working to support the cause. I’m still amazed that this sleepy little town next to where I grew up is such an international hub of elephant excitement.
